Largest lake in The Cordillera Blanca
Parón lake is the largest lake in The Cordillera Blanca in the Peruvian Andes. This beautiful turquoise lagoon is located in the province of Caraz, 100 km north of Huaraz city in north-central Peru. To do this trek is best to be acclimatised first, the lake is at a height of 4,200 metres. The turquoise colour of the lake comes from high concentrations of dissolved lime.
What do you see
This trek gives you the opportunity to see the astonishing snow peaks such as Hunadoy, Caraz, Piramide and the famous Artesonrajuo. Have you seen the Logo of the American film production company Paramount picture? Well, the mountain that appears in that logo is the peak of Artesonrajuo mountain. There are many mountains covered in snow that surround this beautiful lake and you get to view many of these from different viewpoints and angles.
Best way to do this trek
There are many agencies in Huaraz that offer this tour for an affordable price, but the one I think stands out from the crowd was the team from Akilpo. The cost was around 60 soles per person and the Akilpo team were extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
This tour started early at 5.30 am from Huaraz, a mini bus picked up the people from their accommodation and drove for 1 hour and half to the city of Caraz where we stopped to have breakfast. Then we continued to Quebrada de Parón (the entrance of the lake). We spent about 3-4 hours walking enjoying the beautiful landscape and vegetation.
One thing that you need to be aware of is that you can only walk comfortably on the north side of the lake, it is more difficult to walk on south part of the lake. If you decide to go on your own, be careful as the south section is more steep and dangerous, the path is unmarked and slippery. The north shore is fine and flat, this trek gives you plenty of time to take lots of beautiful pictures of this lake and the peaks. There are may options for your time here, maybe you just want to stay near the entrance and the flat walk or maybe if you are more adventurous you can climb up the moraine for a more amazing view.
What to pack for this trek
My best advice for guys and girls who would like to do this trek is to wear the clothes in layers. This means, wear a t-shirt then a warm jumper and on top of that a jacket and depending on the weather you can remove or put on the clothes accordingly. I leave my must bring items list below:
- Walking near the snow-capped mountains and lake can be very windy and sometimes rainy, therefore a winter hat and a warm jacket and pants are needed. For rainy season, waterproof jacket and pats are a must.
- Trekking boots or very confortable shoes.
- Sun lotion
- Box lunch or snacks
- Bottle of water
- Money to pay the entrance ticket to the National park: 5 soles.
